A brief guide for the traveler who wants to make the journey from Havana Airport (HAV) to Varadero, Cuba’s most popular beach resort, famous for its turquoise waters and white sands.Full of resorts and hotels, you will have the time to relax and enjoy 100% the beach and other facilities. An essential destination where tradition and modernity perfectly coexist with eco-tourism, snorkeling and souvenir shopping. Here are my tips on how to make the 134-kilometre trip from the Cuban capital, enjoying the sights along the way where the journey is as interesting as the destination, and Varadero never disappoints.
You have two main options for getting to Varadero, and those are catching the bus or getting a taxi. Buses from Havana to Varadero are operated by a company called Viazul, taking from two to three hours (depending on traffic and the number of stops). There are only four departures in each direction per day, so be mindful of the timetable.
There is no direct bus from Havana Airport to Varadero. First, you need to go Old Havana and after you should catch a bus. The frequency of services is subject to change (more buses can be added during peak season), but the last bus back to Havana usually leaves at 5pm, and from Havana to Varadero at 6pm. The Havana bus arrives and departs from Via Azul (next to the zoo), and the Varadero bus station is on Calle 36.
The other solution is to book a taxi with a driver who will drive you from Havana Airport to Varadero. The trip is about 1 hour and half, so it’s going to be pretty light. If you travel with other people you can split the ride cost and enjoy the trip more “privately”.
As you might know, internet connection in Cuba is not the best ever! It’s definitely improving but if you need to make reservations online and you already know your calendar it’s better if you book in advance your transfer from Havana Airport to Varadero.
A better alternative is to arrange for a taxi to meet you and have the relief of knowing a reliable taxi is waiting for you at pre-paid and with a driver name and car you already know about. You can book your transfer easily for a Modern or Classic car with a few minutes on our page.
